On Monday, the San Francisco Medical Examiner confirmed that a man died after setting himself on fire last week in Sproul Plaza at the University of California, Berkeley.

Chet Bohrer, 42, of Salt Lake County, Utah, was confirmed as the man who died in the incident by the medical examiner's office.

Dozens of students saw Bohrer light himself on fire in the crowded plaza on Wednesday, with many witnesses rushing to put out the flames, BerkeleySide reported.

The Berkeley Fire Department shared with the outlet that first responders took Bohrer to Highland Hospital in Oakland where he was discovered to have suffered second-and third-degree burns over his body.

Two bystanders who attempted to help extinguish the flames ended up suffering burns. A man was treated for his injuries at the scene, while a woman was taken to a hospital for minor burns.

A spokesperson for the university said that no new information was available with InsideHigherEd.

The incident is still being investigated by the UC Berkeley police.
