Man gets trapped in self-driving cab

A man in Phoenix had a terrifying experience when he got trapped in a self-driving cab that circled a parking lot, nearly causing him to miss his flight.

Tech entrepreneur Mike Johns ended up being stuck in a Waymo taxi as it drove around in circles while he was trying to make a flight at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix.

Johns posted video of the ordeal to LinkedIn, saying he felt trapped and wondered if the car was hacked as it circled around and around.

"This autonomous vehicle said to heck with GPS, the car just went around in circles, eight circles at that," he wrote. "Is someone pulling a prank,  is this car hacked? It felt like a scene in a sci fi thriller."

As the car continued to drive in loops and Johns became dizzy, Waymo support contacted him directly after noticing that the car was "experiencing some routing issue." A representative told Johns that she couldn't control the vehicle directly and instructed him to stop the car through the app, which resolved the issue.

While he was understandably frustrated, Johns still made his flight on time. He concluded his post by saying the experience has turned him off using driverless taxis in the future.

"I'll keep it old fashion and just Lyft or Uber," he said.

Following the incident, Waymo completed a software update that addressed the issue, CNN reported.
