A Minnesota man, apparently unhappy about a 20-month prison sentence he was given, demonstrated his unwillingness to serve time in the most obvious way he could think of: He ran out of the courthouse as fast as he could.

Ironically, 25-year-old Bemidji resident Alexander Robere was appearing in a Detroit Lakes courthouse Wednesday to be sentenced for escaping from custody back in May 2021.

Robere had previously posted a $15,000 bail and wasn't in custody when he appeared for the hearing. When he found out he was being sent to prison, Robere took off and didn't look back.

"After being sentenced to 20 months in prison, Robare fled the 2nd floor courtroom and ran out of the courthouse," Becker County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Although deputies immediately went after him, Robere was too fast and couldn't be found in the surrounding area.

Deputies eventually tracked him down at about eight hours later and he was taken into custody, the sheriff's office said.

Additional charges -- which will likely lead to a longer prison sentence -- are now expected to be filed against Robere.
