A powerful storm ripped across the southern, midwestern and northeastern U.S. over the weekend, leaving 10 dead in its wake and causing massive amounts of power outages across several states.

The storm was dubbed “powerful and historic” by the National Weather Service in Louisville, Ky.

PowerOutage.US, a website that tracks power outages, showed over 419,000 Americans were left without power in the storm’s wake as it trailed destruction across a sizable swath of the country.

Among those killed by the storm, five people were killed by falling trees reportedly due to the severe weather: three in Alabama and two in Tennessee. A Mississippi woman was killed by a tree branch that struck her SUV, and an Arkansas man dove into floodwaters and drowned.

Fallen trees and tornadoes were reported across the south in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas while Arkansas and Missouri both experienced flooding.

Even people as far north as Michigan were impacted, with 346,639 customers left without power by the storm and inclement weather forcing mass air travel cancellations with the Detroit Metropolitan Airport closing completely on Friday.

Cancelled flights were also reported across New England as the storm made its way east over the weekend, causing more flooding in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and heavy snowfall in Indiana and Maine.

Authorities say anyone who encounters a downed power line as a result of weather should stay away from it and call 911 to report it.
