While the city of Denver was celebrating its first-ever NBA Finals victory on Monday night, a shooting broke out, leaving nine people injured near the Nuggets’ home arena.

The Denver Police Department shared that a suspect, who was also shot, was taken into custody in connection to the shooting.

The suspect’s injuries are believed to be non-life threatening, but three of those who were wounded are currently in critical condition.

When it comes to how or why the shooting took place, police shared that the details are not yet clear.

“This is a complex, ongoing investigation in its early stages,” the department said. “Preliminary info indicates multiple shots were fired during an altercation involving several individuals.”

The shooting was about a mile from Ball Arena, where the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Jokic won their first-ever NBA title, defeating the Miami Heat in five games.

Around the arena, police had closed down some downtown streets to allow the large crowds to exit the arena. They noted that many of the fans who were at the game had dispersed before the shooting began, but there was still a crowd in the area.

The investigation remains ongoing at this point. No charges have been announced for the suspect in custody.
