Late last Thursday night, a man allegedly attempted to rob a taco shop in Houston, Tex. However, a vigilante shot the man dead and returned the money to other patrons, authorities said.
Now, the unnamed 46-year-old man’s case has been referred to a grand jury in Harris County, per the Houston Police Department.
“Since the male is not arrested or charged, his identity is not being released,” said authorities.
A news release explained that a Black man identified as 30-year-old Eric Eugene Washington entered El Ranchito #4 at 6873 South Gessner Road in Houston around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
“Witnesses told officers the suspect entered the restaurant and pointed a pistol at patrons as he demanded their money,” said police. “As the suspect collected money from patrons, one of them produced a gun of his own and shot the suspect multiple times. The shooter collected the stolen money from the suspect and returned the money to other patrons. He and other patrons (victims) then fled the scene.”
Upon arrival at the scene police found the robbery suspect “in all black clothing, a black ski mask, and black gloves,” shot multiple times.
Paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene and he was later identified as Washington.
Surveillance photos of the male shooter were released the following day, showing a white man in a T-shirt, long pants carrying a tan jacket. Authorities also released an image of his vehicle, a 1970s or ’80s model pickup truck with no bed.
Houston homicide detectives questioned the vigilante suspect Monday.
“Any patrons present during the time of the shooting are encouraged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 to provide statements to investigators,” police said.
