A 15-year-old boy who was campaigning for Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) was shot outside his home Thursday, according to the Savannah Police Department.
By Friday, authorities had arrested 42-year-old Jimmy Paiz for the shooting. He has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
According to a preliminary investigation, the teen was outside his home on Hartridge Street in Savannah Thursday, going door-to-door for the Warnock campaign. At the door of a residence on the street, Paiz shot him through a closed door.
Police arrived at the scene around 5:35 p.m. and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported to Memorial Medical Center and treated for non-life threating injuries.
Paiz was quickly apprehended and booked into the Chatham County jail.
Warnock – who won a runoff election against former Republican senator Kelly Loeffler in 2020 – is running against Republican challenger Herschel Walker in the Dec. 6 runoff election. He had slightly more votes than Walker in the November general election and as of Thursday an Emerson College poll showed that Warnock maintained a slight lead over the challenger.
Though the victim was campaigning for Warnock when he was shot, Savannah police do not believe the attack was politically motivated.
“The case remains under investigation,” authorities said.
