'They're all high': Problems at the New Orleans PD go beyond stoned rats

Last month, the New Orleans police superintendent told the city council that police headquarters needed a lot of upgrades. But one comment stuck out: “They're all high.” It had nothing to do with anyone in the city, but with rodents in the department's evidence room.

This week on Something Offbeat, Audacy's Mark Menard, a Louisiana native, joined Mike Rogers to discuss the saga at the New Orleans Police Department.

“The rats had gotten into the evidence room, into the confiscated marijuana and were satisfying their munchies… with something that was probably just giving them more munchies,” he said. Menard also explained why the rats were able to get stoned and why plans for the department to move are speeding along.

Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
