Trump has to be 'much smarter' about messaging if he wants to win over the 12% of undecided voters: Newell

Ron Faucheux, a political analyst and publisher of Lunchtime Politics, told WWL's Newell Normand that the political race isn't as set as the media may have you believe because no matter how many polls show Kamala Harris gaining ground over Donald Trump, the margin of people who are undecided is still huge.

And to win over those voters, Trump has to focus on getting the 'common man,' Newell said.

"You know, it's amazing. I was looking at a list of the headlines of the 'no tax on tips' plan released by Trump versus Vice President Harris. And you look at the top lines ... and all of a sudden they're fighting for the common man ... (Trump) has to be smarter, much smarter about messaging. And it just drives me absolutely crazy."

Faucheux added that recent polls show 12% of voters don't know yet who they're going to cast a ballot for.

"Even though the country is highly polarized and there's intense feelings on both sides, there are still people in this country who are undecided about how they want to vote. They're not sure, some of them are parking their votes with a third party candidate as basically kind of a protest against both candidates. They're cross pressured. Some of them, like both of them. Some of them dislike both of them. Some of them like some things about Harris and some things about Trump. And even though that's not the picture that's painted of the electorate, there is a significant number of of voters who are like that.

"And in that last poll that we saw showed it was 12% of the voters that are not picking either Harris or Trump. Now, ultimately, those people, many of those people will make a decision and pick one of the two."

And in the end, who they pick, these legions of undecided voters, will be the winner. The current margins between Harris and Trump are 1-3% in most polls.

That means it's still anybody's race to win. And for Trump to do it, he has to go back to policy, both agreed.

"But what she (Harris) has done is got the race to a point where she's now positioned where she can win, but Trump is still position where he can win" Faucheux said. "So it's so it's a close race and and you know, everybody is expecting Trump to get his act together and to get his message together and to stop all the distractions and personal distractions and attacks and the focus on, you know, the Biden Harris record ... and to put the race on ideology.

"And even though he's now talking about that, he's not talking about it the right way. He's overstating things. He's exaggerating things and most Republican campaign people I know around the country are very frustrated by it."
