After his comments on Monday about not supporting a federal abortion ban but instead leaving it up to the states to decide, former President Donald Trump faced heavy criticism from those within his party.

Among the most outspoken was South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who said that he didn’t agree with Trump’s opinions on the matter and would continue to push for a national 15-week ban.

However, Trump wasted no time responding, posting on Truth Social that Graham and those who think like him are “doing a great disservice to the Republican Party, and to our Country.”

Trump went as far as to say that those who publicly favor stricter abortion laws were committing political malpractice.

“Terminating Roe v. Wade was, according to all Legal Scholars, a Great Event, but sometimes with Great Events come difficulties,” Trump wrote. “Many Good Republicans lost Elections because of this Issue, and people like Lindsey Graham, that are unrelenting, are handing Democrats their dream of the House, Senate, and perhaps even the Presidency.”

Trump maintained that Republicans pushing for abortion restrictions have only aided Democrats in their fight to gain seats and win control of the House of the Senate.

He said that Democrats “love the issue” and want Republicans to continue bringing it up and fighting over it.

In his post, he then criticized Marjorie Dannenfelser, head of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, and other pro-life activists he called “hardliners.”

“Lindsey, Marjorie, and others fought for years, unsuccessfully, until I came along and got the job done,” Trump wrote. “Then they were gone, never to be heard from again, until now. We cannot let our Country suffer any further damage by losing Elections on an issue that should always have been decided by the States, and now will be!”

Still, Trump himself has also taken his fair share of criticism over his statement on abortion from Monday, in which he sat on the fence and refused to denounce or support restrictions, instead saying, “it’s up to the states to do the right thing.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence fired back at this, calling Trump’s statement a “slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020.”

Dannenfelser and her group said they were “deeply disappointed” in Trump’s stance on the issue.
