The Cut Sheet moves into Pennsylvania’s measles dispute, Dr. Mehmet Oz’s response to Josh Shapiro and Trump officially putting “Lake America” into federal use. We stay with “Lake America” as Trump jokes about finding new names for the Atlantic and Pacific, Jessica Tarlov reacts on Fox and we return to the CBC’s 9/11 wording policy. From there we shift into the Lindsay Clancy murder trial as the jury deliberates. We play portions of the defense closing argument blaming medicine, medical care and postpartum psychosis, then the prosecution’s argument that the order and planning involved in the deaths of Clancy’s three children show rational thought and intent.
Our position is forceful: we argue that the evidence cited by prosecutors supports premeditation and that a mental-health condition does not erase responsibility for the killings. We discuss the legal insanity route, the possibility of eventual release from an institution and why Nick expects a first-degree murder verdict. The conversation then turns to Jeanine John Taele, the former Marine arrested at Trump’s Los Angeles golf course, after prosecutors reveal notebooks containing more than 200 pages involving Secret Service details, drawings and copies of Melania Trump’s schedule. We repeatedly frame the source of that information as an open question rather than claim a leak or breach has been proven.
The back half gives us one of the funniest runs of the morning after ICE awards a $16.7 million contract for 6,000 pairs of electric shock gloves. Shawn turns the story into a Mike Francesa-as-border-czar impression, which slowly drifts into his Donald Trump cadence. We then get serious again with Speaker Mike Johnson warning Republicans about the consequences of losing Congress, Nick pressing the Senate to act on the SAVE America Act and Shawn laying out a strategy to force Democrats to choose between establishment figures and Hasan Piker after Jon Ossoff and others reject Piker’s rhetoric.
