Doug Pederson among 5 potential candidates to replace Urban Meyer as Jags head coach

The fact that Jim Caldwell doesn't have a job in the NFL right now is a discussion that may be too uncomfortable to have at this moment. But in terms of the Jacksonville job, I think Caldwell would be a perfect fit.

Caldwell is an offensive-minded coach who has worked with quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford, and Joe Flacco. He won Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens at the end of the 2012 season as the quarterbacks' coach and interim offensive coordinator, which prompted the Lions to hire him as their head coach in 2014, after Caldwell had only one full season as Baltimore’s OC.

Caldwell is a calm and patient coach which is exactly what the Jags need after what they had just gone through with Meyer -- I think he could do wonders in Jacksonville. According to long-time friend and former head coach Tony Dungy, Caldwell is ready to be in the NFL again so we will see if he lands with the Jags or any other franchise as a head coach. He certainly seems to be the fan-favorite pick on social media.

Pederson is currently the odds on favorite to land the Jags job amongst media members and Vegas. Unlike Meyer -- who didn't know how to handle the multiple personalities and needs that are attached to an NFL locker room, Pederson is a player's coach and someone the team can get behind. With the characters he had on his teams in Philly, Pederson can handle just about any personality.

Like Caldwell, Pederson has a track record of working with some noteworthy quarterbacks including Donovan McNabb, Alex Smith and Carson Wentz. He has a long history with Andy Reid, first in Philly and then in Kansas City whereas the lead play-caller, Pederson led the Chiefs to an 11-5 record and a trip to the playoffs in 2015.

During his time in the city of brotherly love, Pederson won two division titles and the franchise’s only Super Bowl -- compiling a record of 42-37-1 in the regular season and 4-2 in the postseason. Pederson's tenure in Philly wasn't perfect, but he will command respect the second he steps foot in Jacksonville and knows how to nurture quarterbacks which the Jags so desperately need as Trevor Lawerence has only thrown one touchdown and four picks in the last six games which are abysmal numbers for a guy who was as hyped up and as talented as he is.

Meet the man that single-handedly transformed the Cowboys' offense. With Dak Prescott returning from a brutal leg injury, the Cowboys have been one of the league's most potent offenses this season. Prescott has tossed 24 touchdowns through week 13 behind a balanced running game of Zeke Elliot and Tony Pollard.

Having played quarterback himself, beginning with a legendary college career at Boise State to being a backup in the NFL, Moore knows what it takes to be successful at the position, with or without the headset on. Despite that, Moore would be the youngest out of any of these candidates, turning 34 next year, which may be too young to try and turn around a messy Jags squad, but he is certainly a star on the rise in his third year in Big D.

This guy seems to get overlooked year after year when any coaching vaccines open up. Why is that the case? Who knows. It may stem from Bieniemy's run-ins with the law during his playing days, but Bieniemy's track record of success in KC with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense speaks for itself. He played a major role in the development of Mahomes and like other candidates on this list, he is an offensive-focused coach who has won a Lombardi Trophy as an assistant.

Both of Andy Reid's former play callers (Doug Pederson and Matt Nagy) got head coaching gigs because of their experience under Reid, so at this point, it's not when he will get a head coaching offer it's when.

Although I personally think McDaniels is playing the long game in New England -- potentially waiting on Belichick to retire, he deserves another shot as a head coach. I can point to many masterful games McDaniels has called while in Foxboro, but the old-school, three yards and a cloud of dust offense he ran during the Pats against the Bills in awful conditions this season is all you need to know about how creative the 45-year-old offensive coordinator is.

McDaniel's is utilizing the skill set of Mac Jones to a tee and if he takes the Jags job, he will have a more talented QB in Trevor Lawrence. Although Belichick assistants have had struggled in translating the 'Patriot way' to their new teams, McDaniel's has had 18 years in New England, plus the experience of a failed stint in Denver.

Leftwich might make the most sense for the Jags job. Having been the franchise's first-round draft pick back in 2003, the former quarterback will be respected amongst the players and most certainly the fanbase. If the GOAT Tom Brady has the utmost respect for Leftwich, I would say that's a pretty good co-sign. Outside of football, this would be a great story if Leftwich gets the job and finds success in Jacksonville.

Now on the football side of things, Leftwich has transformed into a brilliant offense mind as Bruce Arians’ second in command of one of the league’s most explosive offenses over the last two seasons. With how hard it is to win in Jacksonville, what guy would be a better fit to help Trevor Lawrence through what has been a truly ridiculous start to his NFL career better than Leftwich.
