DK Metcalf has been a hot name in NFL trade rumors almost immediately after Russell Wilson's departure from Seattle to Denver. A recent report came out this past weekend that claimed that Metcalf could be had by any team around the league for "the right price."
The 24-year-old receiver shut down that rumor on Twitter Monday, citing the most credible source there is--himself.
Though Metcalf poured a large bucket of cold water on many NFL fans' faces who hoped the receiver would come to their team, Ian Rapport's report may still be somewhat accurate.
Many franchises like the Cowboys and the Eagles would love to have a receiver of Metcalf's caliber on their roster and could have made offers behind the scene that were rejected by the Seahawks front office. It likely came down to whether their offers were enough for Seattle to part with their star wideout.
According to Pete Carroll, Metcalf remains in the team's long-term future and assured fans that the team wants to work on the All-Pro's contract extension as soon as possible.
"It's really important to us. We love him," Carroll said on a Seattle radio station, "He maybe will go down as one of the great draft picks we've ever had here. We are going to do everything we can to get it done."
It's no shocker why some teams around the league would call, asking what the price is for Metcalf considering that he has the opportunity to become a free agent in 2023. Although nothing has metastasized yet, the Seahawks are in full rebuild mode and with Metcalf being one of their few valuable assets on the roster, the front office could potentially leverage his value for draft picks and players that fit with what type of roster they are trying to build. That's a decision GM John Schineder will have to figure out soon.
Metcalf had a stellar 2021 campaign, snagging 75 receptions for 967 yards, on a career-high 12 touchdown catches. He is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is set to earn $3.9 million in 2022.
