Hugh: 'There's no such thing as bad publicity to Darius Slay'

The drama of Darius Slay appearing on Micah Parsons’ podcast just keeps growing.

Joe Giglio & Hugh Douglas played a clip Friday of Slay talking to the media about being on Parsons’ podcast, as well as C.J. Gardner-Johnson discussing how the team felt about it; we know Parsons and CJGJ have beef, and Slay has said there’s no ill will with him towards either, and it’s kind of a big old mess to everyone…except, apparently, for Slay.

“So Darius was surprised that fans were mad after his team got torched that he went on Micah Parsons podcast?” Joe asked. “Are you new here?”

“I don't think that he thinks the rivalry thing is real,” Hugh responded. “I go back to the way that guys do things nowadays, the way that they operate; the fact that we trade jerseys now on the field with rivalries, that’s something that you do in off-season. You’d NEVER think about doing during the course of the season. I’m friends with Dallas Cowboys, and to this day, the conversation that we have about the rivalry, it's still a touchy subject.”

Hugh is good friends with Nate Newton, and gave an example of their conversations – and yeah, you can respect players and be friendly, but if you’re too friendly in the heat of battle, fans are gonna have questions.

“I see why people are upset, because it's in season and he said something derogatory about one of your guys after a loss, and even though you didn’t say anything bad, you put seasoning on it,” Hugh said.

“They’re all human beings, and they are allowed to be. I don't care if he's friends with a Cowboy, I’m not gonna lose any sleep,” Joe replied. “You're all athletes and players and maybe frat brothers or whatever, who cares? But, you're rubbing it in fans faces, you're making it public.”

The guys then played the clip of Slay doubling down and saying he’s go on the podcast again, even during Cowboys week…

“That’s why I said the other day when everybody was upset and couldn’t believe he did it – I can, because that's who Slay is. For Slay, there's no such thing as bad publicity,” Hugh replied. “We talk about how Alec Bohm has to let stuff go, Slay is the guy you want Bohm to be in a sense. Slay does not care about what you think about him. You don't think Slay knew what that was gonna mean for him? Slay played in Detroit, no disrespect but Detroit ain’t Philly. You come back to Philly, you play in Philly, you become a an elite athlete here in Philly, your life is different.”

For sure, some athletes (sup Jason Kelce?) will never pay for a thing ever again in the city, and to Douglas, Slay is maybe just trying to set up his next life?

“You play here, it hits different than playing anywhere else, and Slay knows that. He’s capitalizing on that, trying to springboard himself into his next career,” Hugh said. “He’s doing it strategically.”

That left Joe just one thing to say:

“Can I springboard him outta here?”
