Jay Wright announced his retirement on Wednesday night after 21 seasons as head basketball coach of the Villanova Wildcats.

"Over the past 21 seasons, I have had the opportunity to live out a professional dream as the head coach at Villanova," Wright wrote in a letter he posted on his Twitter account.

Fordham University coach Kyle Neptune will replace Wright as Villanova's head coach and Wright will remain with the program as a part of the leadership team.

While there has been plenty of speculation about Wright leaving college for the NBA, that—at least according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski—is not the case here.

Wright, 60, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall Of Fame in 2021, is one of the most accomplished coaches in Philadelphia sports history, not just in college basketball.

Wright won two National Championships, reached Four Final Fours, won eight Big East regular season titles and five Big East Tournaments, and was named Naismith College Coach of the Year two times.

The Churchville, PA native and graduate of Council Rock High School North, has a 520–197 (.725) record at Villanova over 21 seasons.
