It's finally done. More than three weeks after Jaylen Brown was first eligible to sign a supermax extension, he has reportedly done so.
According to Stadium's Shams Charania, Brown and the Celtics have agreed to a five-year, $304 million contract. It is the richest deal in NBA history, is fully guaranteed, and comes with a trade kicker, meaning Brown would be paid a bonus if Boston trades him at any point during the life of the deal. There is no fifth-year player option, according to Charania.
The 26-year-old Brown is coming off the best season of his career, averaging a career-high 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He was named to the All-NBA Second Team for the first time, which is what made him eligible for the supermax.
The delay in Brown's new contract had led some fans and media to wonder if something was amiss, but now that the deal is done, Brown will be locked in next to Jayson Tatum for the foreseeable future, solidifying them as the core the Celtics will continue to build around while killing speculation -- at least for a while -- that the team could potentially split up the Jays.
Brown and Tatum have yet to win a championship together, but they have reached the Eastern Conference Finals in four of their six seasons together (Brown has gotten that far in five of his seven years in the NBA) and reached the NBA Finals in 2022.
The Celtics have been the Sixers' biggest rivals since The Process era, as they have eliminated Philadelphia in the postseason three times since 2018 (2018, 2020, 2023).
The Sixers have not been past the second-round of the playoffs since The Process began in 2012. Neither team has been able to win an NBA Championship, however.
