The Cowboys have experienced yet another early playoff exit, losing to the Green Bay Packers in embarrassing fashion 48-32 in the Wild Card Round on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.
Dallas made lots of unfortunate history in the loss, becoming the first team to lose to a No. 7 seed in the NFL Playoffs since the league expanded the tournament to 14 teams in 2020. The Cowboys also became the first team since the NFC-AFC merger in 1970 to win at least 12 games in three straight seasons and not make the conference championship game.
Speculation about Mike McCarthy's job status became rampant during and after the bloodbath with reporters from ESPN's Adam Schefter to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio weighing in on the coach's future in Dallas.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke with the media following the team's loss and wasn't prepared to answer any questions about McCarthy's future, only saying that he hasn't "thought one second about" it. But he did speak about how disappointed he was by the club's defeat.
"This is one of my (biggest) surprises since I've been involved in sport. Period," Jones said. ... This seems like the most painful (playoff loss) because we all had such great expectation and hope for this team. ... I'm floored. It's beyond by comprehension."
