The 49ers can’t catch a break at quarterback. Not ideal timing, either.
In a game where Brock Purdy injured his elbow in the first quarter of Sunday’s NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles, fourth-stringer Josh Johnson also had to exit the game to evaluated for a concussion in the third quarter after hitting his head on the grass during a quarterback takedown.

Johnson took over for Purdy with 4:50 left in the first quarter but exited with 12:30 left in the third quarter. Purdy re-entered the game despite his injury, but the 49ers didn’t attempt a throw in Purdy’s first full drive back with the offense.
It’s been an absolute whirlwind of a season for the 49ers quarterbacks. Trey Lance was lost for the season in Week 2 with an ankle/foot injury and veteran backup Jimmy Garoppolo (foot/ankle) was injured in Week 13, opening the door for Purdy’s remarkable run as Mr. Irrelevant. Purdy led the 49ers to eight straight wins entering Sunday’s NFC title game.
The 36-year-old Johnson was signed in December after Garoppolo’s injury to be veteran insurance. Johnson struggled to move the Niners offense, as he went 7-of-13 for 74 yards and was called for three delay of game calls.
If the 49ers somehow make the Super Bowl, it’d be a ridiculous story that will be remembered by fans for ages. San Francisco trailed 21-7 midway through the third quarter.
This is a developing story …
