UPDATE: Jeff Passan reports that Kyle Anderson is headed to Seattle, as the deal with the Phillies fell through due to a medical review of one of the Phillies' players involved in the trade.

--------------

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded starting pitcher Tyler Anderson to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for prospects Cristian Hernandez and Abrahan Gutierrez, according to multiple reports.

The southpaw was scratched from his scheduled Tuesday night start and Pirates manager Derek Shelton said they have activated pitcher Cody Ponce from Triple-A Indianapolis and infielder Rodolfo Castro from Double-A Altoona.

They have been brought up to replace recently traded players Adam Frazier and Clay Holmes.

Anderson, 31, helps bolster the back-end of the Phillies rotation as they continue to battle for the NL East. The left-hander is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 86 strikeouts in 103.1 innings pitched this season. He has pitched into the sixth inning in 11 of his 18 starts, making him an immediate upgrade over Vince Velasquez.

Hernandez is a 20-year-old right-handed pitcher who is ranked 25th on the Phillies Baseball America prospects list and was a Dominican Summer League All-Star in 2018. He is 2-5 with a 3.49 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 74 strikeouts over 56.2 innings in 12 starts this season in Low-A Clearwater. He is averaging nearly 3.5 walks per nine winnings with 11.75 strikeouts per nine.

Gutierrez, 21, is a catcher and ranked 27th on the Phillies Baseball America prospects list. He is hitting a slash line of .285/.418/.424 with five home runs and 29 RBI and nine doubles through 48 games for Low-A Clearwater this season.

The initial reaction among scouts appears to be promising for the Pirates.
