Vinny Curry and Joe Douglas go way back, Curry having played in Philly for three of Douglas’ four seasons with the Eagles as VP of Player Personnel (2016-17 and 2019).

Familiarity helps when it comes to free agency decisions, as it did with Douglas when Curry signed a one-year deal with the Jets last month, but

“The relationship with Joe, and just to see what he was building was too good to pass up. The excitement around the building when I met some of the staff – I knew it was a great fit for me,” Curry said Tuesday. “It’s a great opportunity for me.”

In fact, an opportunity that reminds Curry of the lead up to the Eagles’ lone Super Bowl championship after the 2017 season.

“I just wanted to be aboard the ship, because I’ve seen it before, when Coach Pederson took over in Philly,” Curry said. “I just wanted to be a part of it.”

Curry also had some high praise for his new head coach, Robert Saleh, who he admired from afar while watching a heavily-depleted 49ers defense continue to have success last season.

What he did was amazing. Anybody that watches football, I will hope they paid attention to that,” Curry said of Saleh’s defense in 2020. “What he did was amazing, for his starters to get hurt and then he comes with a second group and does what he does. And even those guys have a rotational group. It’s just amazing man.”

Curry spoke Tuesday along with fellow newcomer Sheldon Rankins, and those two plus Carl Lawson will join a defensive line that includes a burgeoning star in Quinnen Williams, whom Curry is looking forward to lining up next to.

“I think he’s a beast," Curry said of Williams. "I think last season he got into his groove, got into his own, got real comfortable and started just wreaking havoc. I think he’s only going to get better from there.”

And as for the overhauled D-line itself?

"I think the sky’s the limit," Curry said. "I think I fit right in with those guys with the way I play the game. I think once we all get around each other, get a feel for each other, man, I think we have the potential to really be a force up front.”
