It may be short lived, but six-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady is no longer the No. 1 merchandise seller in the NFL.
According to Scott Soshnick of Variety, Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes usurped Brady as the top merchandise seller in the NFL. Per the article, merchandise is defined as "officially licensed player-identified merchandise, including jerseys, trading cards, wall decals, T-shirt and bobbleheads."
To see Mahomes atop such a list is hardly a surprise. In 2018, his first season as a starter, Mahomes tossed 50 touchdown passes and won the NFL MVP. How'd he follow that up? By leading a fourth quarter comeback in Super Bowl LIV to help Kansas City win their first Super Bowl title since 1969.
For Brady to have been atop the list for the three previous years - as noted by Variety - is pretty remarkable. Throughout the course of Brady's 20 seasons in New England, he didn't change his No. 12 and the Patriots didn't change primary uniforms once. You have to be a special type of dominant to continue to find yourself atop lists like this under those circumstances.
In any event, Brady is likely to to reclaim his spot after signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last month. Not only is this the first time he changed teams during his illustrious career, but the Buccaneers have new uniforms in 2020. This list isn't simply made up of jersey sales, but that likely accounts for a giant chunk of the merchandise sales.
Baltimore Ravens' quarterback Lamar Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP, is now No. 3 on the list. He's followed by Dallas Cowboys' running back Ezekiel Elliott and Cleveland Browns' quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield had the highest-selling jersey last preseason, and even after a disappointing season, don't expect him to fall too far on this list because the Browns are among a slew of teams with new jerseys for the 2020 season.
