(610 Sports) – The perceived rivalry between Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow has earned comparisons to the one between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, most notably due to the star power of the quarterbacks involved. On Sunday afternoon, the Chiefs and Bengals added another chapter to the so-called rivalry, and once-again, Burrow and the Bengals came out on top.
The matchup on Sunday was a pivotal one, with Kansas City attempting to hold onto the #1 seed in the AFC and the Bengals looking to keep pace with the Baltimore Ravens atop the AFC North standings. The Bengals came out on top 27-24 in the battle of AFC powerhouses, giving the Bengals a third-straight win over Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Joining 610 Sports 'The Drive' for his weekly interview on Monday, Mahomes was asked if he sees Burrow and the Bengals as the Chiefs' new rival?
"I don't know if you call them a rival, we haven't beat 'em yet," said Mahomes. "Until we beat them it's not really a rivalry, they've just beat us a couple of times now."
Mahomes isn't wrong, it's hard to justify calling something a rivalry when it's been so one-sided, regardless of how competitive the games between the two teams have been.
Being on the wrong side of the outcome in his three games against Cincinnati is unusual waters for Mahomes, not many quarterbacks get the better of him and the Chiefs in general, let alone in consecutive fashion.
Burrow is now 3-0 against Mahomes, making him the only quarterback with multiple wins and an undefeated record against Mahomes and the Chiefs. He's also the only quarterback to win three straight games against him. The Bengals are the only team with three wins against the Mahomes-led Chiefs.
"I'm sure we'll play 'em a lot in the following years and maybe again in the playoffs if we match up again there," said Mahomes of the Burrow and the Bengals. "But there's a lot of good teams in the AFC, so we just need to continue to get better and better and prepare ourselves to make a playoff run."
