(610 Sports) – Highlighted by a league-leading nine fumbles, the Kansas City Chiefs sit tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars at the bottom of the league in turnover margin at -11. On the flip side, the team is preparing to face a Packers' defense that ranks second in the NFL with a turnover margin of +8.
With that, it's no surprise to hear from Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman, that ball security has been a recent point of emphasis in practice.
Joining 610 Sports' Cody & Gold on Thursday, Hardman talked about the team's preparation and what they are focusing on in an attempt to limit turnovers and what defenses have been doing to slow down the Chiefs offense.
"What's been the practice focus, offensively, during this stretch," asked show co-host Cody Tapp? "The same stuff, or are you guys working on individual things, in particular?"
"We're having problems turning over the ball, so working on ball security, working on the small things," said Hardman. "Knowing what a team's gonna give you, take the easy looks, do all the right things, little things, the small details. Don't stop ourselves."
Hardman was also asked about the offense's struggles over the past couple of weeks in which they've scored a combined 23 points, which is less than their season average of 26 points per game.
"What's hard about it, is that teams don't play us like they play other teams," said Hardman. "You can watch six or seven weeks of film and they play one way, as soon as we play them, it's a whole different ballgame."
While this isn't exactly news to anyone watching the games, we've all seen teams playing two safeties over the top in an attempt to take away the deep ball, it is telling that the offense is looking to play within itself and make the adjustments needed to sustain drives and take what they are given. That can't be particularly easy for a team that has made it's mark with being a high octane offense that can take the top off of a defense at any given moment but if there is a coaching duo that can figure it out, it's Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy.
The defense, on the other hand, let's hope that we see more of what we saw against the giants and that Melvin Ingram can help generate more pressure on the quarterback than what we've seen to this point.
