CHICAGO (670 The Score) -- After the Bears lost 26-23 to the Saints in overtime on Sunday, coach Matt Nagy was fuming. But it wasn't because of the outcome as much as one play.
Bears receiver Javon Wims was ejected for punching Saints safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the helmet twice in the third quarter, prompting a skirmish between players on the field.
"Completely unacceptable," Nagy said postgame. "We've talked to him and told him that that's not how things go here. One of Javon's strengths is his character, who he is as a person. He's since apologized."
The ugly scene unfolded after a play to the opposite side of the field from Wims, who had lined up wide to the right. Wims approached Gardner-Johnson and delivered multiple punches before the Saints swarmed Wims. It wasn't immediately clear what upset Wims. Gardner-Johnson took the punches without retaliating himself.
"There's no part of that in this game," Nagy said. "Again, I still haven't seen it, but from what I've heard, it's not good. That's not how we roll here. We'll be talking to him.
"I'm just going to continue going back, I am really, really bothered by that third-quarter incident. That bothers me."
Wims was ejected from the game and escorted to the Bears' locker room. Chicago was also assessed a 15-yard penalty. Wims could be facing a likely suspension for his actions.
Wims wasn't made available to reporters for comment after the game. Quarterback Nick Foles declined to discuss the incident or whether Wims addressed the team.
The Bears committed seven penalties in the game, part of a sloppy overall performance.
"That's what bothers me and that's what pisses me off, is that there are those issues going on," Nagy said.
"I'm struggling with that right now. It's getting you into a hole. That has to change."
