(670 The Score) A desire to avoid surgery on an injured ring finger was the driving force for Bears top cornerback Jaylon Johnson landing on injured reserve late last week, he told the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Monday evening.
Johnson missed the Bears’ 35-13 loss to the Bills on Saturday and will be sidelined for Chicago’s final two games of the season. He was also dealing with an abdominal injury, but it was the injured finger that had Johnson and the team looking at what was best in the big picture. Johnson is optimistic the finger injury will heal with rest.
“It was just more so the bone and kind of just wanting to not make that any worse than it is right now,” Johnson said. “Because I feel like I’m trying to stay away from surgery best I can. If I can let it heal, that was really my biggest thing.
“With something like that, I’d rather not risk further damage and have to eventually suffer the consequences of prolonging my offseason and even the consequences that may come with the reconstruction of that bone in that finger and whether it’s stiffness or whatever it may be. So definitely trying to take precaution and make sure my body is all healed up moving forward.”
Johnson was “accepting” of the choice to be placed on injured reserve after a discussion with team medical personnel about his health.
“I feel like this was the best option for my body and my career and the team moving forward,” Johnson said.
