(670 The Score) New Bears coach Matt Eberflus has found the man to lead his offense.
The Bears have hired Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy as their offensive coordinator, the team officially announced Sunday.
Getsy, 37, has been the Packers’ quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons and added the title of passing game coordinator in 2020. Getsy has worked alongside Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was recently hired by the Broncos as their new head coach. Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named the Associated Press NFL MVP in 2020 with Getsy serving as quarterbacks coach.
The Packers were planning to interview Getsy for their vacant offensive coordinator position, but he was plucked away by the Bears, who hired Eberflus on Thursday.
Getsy will be tasked with overseeing the Bears’ offense alongside the defensive-minded Eberflus. Chicago’s offense ranked in the bottom one-third of the NFL in most statistical categories in 2021, including 24th in total offense and 27th in scoring offense. The Bears fired former coach Matt Nagy on Jan. 10 in large part because of the team’s offensive struggles, and now it’s Getsy’s job to rebuild it.
The Bears boast promise in the form of second-year quarterback Justin Fields, the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft who was inconsistent during his rookie season. Fields, 22, will now be learning his second offensive system in as many years.
The Bears are set to introduce Eberflus and new general manager Ryan Poles at 11 a.m. Monday at Halas Hall.
