Smith has spent 10 years as an NFL assistant, all with the Raiders. He served as the team's assistant defensive line coach for the past three seasons.

Smith was hired by the Raiders in 2012 as a defensive assistant, spending three years in that role. He was later promoted to defensive quality control coach and outside linebackers coach, a role in which he worked alongside current Bears star pass rusher Khalil Mack.

Smith will replace Chris Rumph, who coached the Bears' defensive line in 2021.
