(Audacy) For weeks, it has been well-established that Cubs catcher Willson Contreras will likely be traded this season.
And with the Aug. 2 trade deadline nearing, a Contreras trade seems more likely than ever.
Contreras offers strong offensive production at a position that generally lacks many impactful contributors with the bat. He’d be an upgrade at the position for many contenders, and the return the Cubs could get for him should be commensurate with that.
On the Mully & Haugh Show on 670 The Score on Monday, Jon Heyman of Audacy Sports suggested what the Cubs potentially could get in return for Contreras.
"I think they should get one really good prospect or two pretty good prospects," Heyman said. "He’s one of the better guys who is going to be traded this trading season. He’s right up there with Josh Bell of the Nats and the pitchers."
Considering that contract extension talks haven't progressed between Contreras and the Cubs, landing a higher-end prospect (or prospects) would be decent asset management for the team.
Contreras on Friday was named the National League's starting catcher for the All-Star Game. It marks his third All-Star honor. He’s hitting .266 with 13 homers and an .867 OPS. The Rays, Giants and Guardians are among the potential landing spots for him, and a bidding war for his services would be good news for the Cubs.
