(670 The Score) White Sox right-hander Lance Lynn has been one of the worst starters in all of MLB this season, as he holds a 6.72 ERA, the third-worst mark of the 65 qualifying pitchers in 2023.
Lynn’s struggles continued Thursday, when he went five innings and allowed five runs, all earned, on eight hits and three walks while striking out four in the White Sox’s 6-5 win against the Yankees in the opener of a doubleheader. That once again begged the question – how much longer can the White Sox keep the struggling 36-year-old Lynn in their rotation?
Well, the answer isn’t an easy one because of the White Sox’s lack of pitching depth, as they discussed on the Bernstein & Holmes Show on Thursday.
“Lance Lynn is a problem for the White Sox because they don’t really have a proper alternative,” Dan Bernstein said.
The peripherals don’t help Lynn’s case. He has a 5.32 FIP and a 1.56 WHIP.
“This is someone who at his age now is arguably not a major league pitcher, and yet the White Sox, because of their lack of depth, have almost no choice,” Bernstein said.
“Yeah, I don’t see any real option for them other than to continue to let Lance to try to work this through,” Laurence Holmes said.
Lynn is earning $18.5 million in 2023. The White Sox hold an $18-million club option for him in 2024, which they’ll surely decline given how he’s trending.
