DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket) – Just days ahead of Opening Day and days after losing prospect Riley Greene for the foreseeable future the Detroit Tigers are adding a hard-hitting outfielder.
Detroit has acquired outfielder Austin Meadows from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes and a competitive balance-B pick in this summer’s MLB Draft, the club announced on Twitter Monday night.
The 26-year-old Meadows is coming off a solid season that saw him rack up 27 home runs and a career-high 106 RBIs for the Rays, who finished atop the American League.
Meadows does have a propensity for strikeouts, however, with 102 in 518 at-bats last season. In his only other full season -- 2019 -- Meadows posted 131 strikeouts, though he was an All-Star that year.
Meadows is due $4 million this season after avoiding arbitration earlier this spring.
Detroit drafted Parker Meadows, his younger brother, in 2018.
The move for Meadows comes after the Tigers were hit with some bad news regarding outfield prospect Riley Greene.
The Tigers announced over the weekend that youngster, the club’s 5th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, broke his foot, keeping him from being on the Opening Day roster.
Detroit is set to open the season on Friday at Comerica Park against the rival Chicago White Sox.
