Some errors in baseball are completely mindboggling. One can point to Bill Buckner's infamous gaffe during a crucial Game 6 in the 1986 World Series vs. the Mets and Alex Gonzalez's Game 3 mishap during the 2003 NLCS as some of the worst blunders in MLB history.
Although the stakes weren't as high as Buckner's and Gonzalez's flubs, Gavin Sheets made an egregious error in the first inning of the White Sox-Guardians game Monday night. Owen Miller hit a pop-up to right field which should've been a routine out for Sheets but he wasn't able couldn't corral it--ultimately leading to the first run of the night.
Guardians color commentator Rick Manning had the perfect comment to sum up the entire mishap.
“Are you s–tting me?” Manning exclaimed as the ball came into the infield.
Sheets' mishap was just one of many gaffes made by the White Sox who were plagued by four errors and blew many chances to score late. This gaffe from Tim Anderson (who leads the entire MLB in errors with 9) arguably kicked off a furious comeback effort from Cleveland.
Things got really interesting when Cleveland first baseman Josh Naylor walked up to the plate with the bases loaded, down four, and proceed to hit a grand slam deep to center field to tie up the game at 8.
Naylor then hit another homer in extras to give the Guardians a staggering 12-9 victory over a stunned White Sox team. 'Are you s–tting me' would also be an appropriate response to Naylor's late-game heroics.
Chicago's loss to the Guardians is the second time in the past week a team has blown a six-run lead, with the Phillies accomplishing that feat against the Mets on May 5.
