The Yankees, not far removed from sending Gio Urshela and Gary Sanchez to the Twins for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt, didn't appear to be in the mix for Carlos Correa, who was expected to land a big deal this winter.
Instead, Correa signed a much more manageable three-year, $105.3 million deal with the same Minnesota team that just shipped Donaldson and all $50 million of the 36-year-old's salary to the Yanks, who desperately needed an upgrade at shortstop.
Multiple reports indicated that the Bombers didn't want to sign any of the high-profile free agent shortstops to a long-term deal because of hyped prospect Anthony Volpe making his way up the minor league ranks, but at three years, Correa would have been that stopgap.
Needless to say, MLB Twitter was all over the Yankees when news of the signing broke early Saturday morning, with many convinced that the Twins had just completely fleeced the Yanks, a welcomed change for a Minnesota team that has been consistently pummeled by New York on the field for two decades.
