Way back in 2001, the Celtics drafted Joe Johnson with the 10th overall pick. He played 48 games for Boston before being traded during his rookie season.
Now, 20 years later, “Iso Joe” is back. Seriously. We’re not joking. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics are signing Johnson to a 10-day contract and he is expected to play Wednesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Celtics are desperate for bodies, as they currently have seven players in health and safety protocols. On Monday, they also signed 34-year-old C.J. Miles to a 10-day contract.
Johnson, now 40 years old, has made seven All-Star teams during a career that has also taken him to Phoenix, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Miami, Utah and Houston. He hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2017-18 season, as he been playing in the BIG3 3-on-3 league since 2019. He was named BIG3 MVP in both 2019 and 2021.
The 10-day contract could take Johnson through five games with the Celtics, including Christmas Day against the Milwaukee Bucks.
