CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – A statue honoring Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will be unveiled during Oklahoma’s spring game on April 18 Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday.
Riley’s announcement was posted on the program’s verified Twitter account.
“We’re actually going to unveil it in the stadium. That will be a part of the game,” Riley said. “The thought is that instead of a ceremony outside the stadium, why not include all 50, 60, 70,000 whatever is there, why not include all of them in that moment. It's going to be a pretty cool, historic moment for this program.”
Last fall the university announced Mayfield and his successor, Kyler Murray, would have statues built for ‘Heisman Row’ outside Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma.
Mayfield won the Heisman in 2017 and Murray followed in 2018 making them the first quarterbacks to win the award in consecutive seasons for the same school.
Selected by the Browns No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield started for the Sooners for three seasons where he led them to three Big 12 championships and a pair of College Football Playoff appearances.
Mayfield was Oklahoma’s sixth Heisman Trophy winner joining Billy Vessels, Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Jason White and Sam Bradford.
