CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – If this were a normal offseason, Baker Mayfield and the Browns would be in the middle of OTAs learning new head coach Kevin Stefanski’s new offense.
But this has hardly been a normal offseason.
With NFL facilities remaining shut down through the end of May, Mayfield has reportedly taken matters into his own hands according to the Associated Press and is hosting workouts with a few teammates in Lake Travis, Texas.
Receivers Rashard Higgins and Damion Ratley along with tight end David Njoku have all posted on social media showing them in Texas but none have posted specifically about working out with Mayfield.
Mayfield’s top two targets – Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry are recovering from offseason surgeries.
Beckham, who had a core muscle injury that he played through in 2019 repaired, has been posting regularly about his workouts pledging to return bigger, faster and stronger this year. Landry underwent hip surgery in early February and is expected to be sidelined into August.
With the offseason program all but scuttled – there remains a slight chance a minicamp or workouts could be held before June 26 – Stefanski along with members of his staff have been holding virtual meetings with players via video conference to install his new offense.
Position coaches have been able to do remote film sessions and even send exercises to players to do on their own but that’s as close as the staff has been able to work with players.
Mayfield, who is coming off a disappointing sophomore season that saw him complete 59.4% of his passes and throw 21 interceptions, is learning his third offense under his third full-time head coach in as many seasons.
