CLEVELAND, OH – The Indians battled back from a 5-run deficit to force extra innings, but still fell short on Tuesday night, losing to the Red Sox 7-6.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a solo home run in the 10th inning, to help Boston escape with a win. The Red Sox never trailed in the game.


Indians starter Mike Clevinger struggled against Boston’s potent lineup, allowing four runs and 11 hits in 4⅔ innings. Despite not having his best stuff, Clevinger avoided disaster and kept the Tribe in the game. His ERA rose to 3.34 on the season.

The Indians began their rally in the sixth inning, as Franmil Reyes hit his second home run in as many night’s, a 2-run shot that cut Boston’s lead to 6-3. Cleveland turned to star shortstop Francisco Lindor in the seventh, who delivered a 2-run, 2-out double that made it 6-5.

Lindor delivered again in the ninth, hitting an RBI double that tied the game 6-6. The four-time All-Star was thrown out attempting to steal third base, which ended their ninth inning rally.

The Indians fall to 72-48. They’re 3-2 against Boston this season.

Slamtana makes history

Carlos Santana hit his 27th home run of the season to get the Indians on the board in the fourth inning. It was his third straight game with a homer. He has 201 home runs in an Indians uniform, which gives him the 8th most in team history, passing Travis Hafner.

Santana could move up the list if he stays in Cleveland next year. He has one more year left on his contract. Andre Thornton is 7th with 214 home runs. Larry Doby and Hal Trosky are just ahead with 215 and 216 homers, respectively.

Injury Update

Corey Kluber made his second rehab start on Tuesday night for Double-A Akron. He allowed one run and two hits in four innings. He was perfect through three, before giving up a solo homer in the fourth. For more on his second rehab start, go here.

Up Next

The Indians look for the series win over the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon. Shane Bieber is on the mound for the Tribe. He enters with a 12-4 record and a 3.28 ERA. The Red Sox haven’t named a starter for Wednesday’s series finale. They moved Andrew Cashner to the bullpen, who was scheduled to get the start.
