CLEVELAND, Ohio – Carlos Santana has had a year to remember in Cleveland, but it didn't translate to success in Monday night's Home Run Derby.
Santana finished with 13 homers, which wasn't enough to get past Mets rookie phenom Pete Alonso, who finished with 14 home runs and went on to win the derby. The Indians' star hit eight in the final 1:41, but he didn't qualify for the bonus time, which sealed his fate.
Alonso hit a walk-off home run with one second left in his round, but he did qualify for the extra 30 seconds of bonus time.
Santana was the fifth player in Indians' history to participate in the derby. The night didn't go his way, but he was grateful for the 36,000-plus fans who cheered and supported him.
“It’s special,” he said. “That time is emotional for me. I’m so freaking happy for that and the guys, they support me. I’m proud, I’m proud to come back to Cleveland. It’s my home.”

July 9, 2019 Santana has had a career season for the Indians, posting a .297 average with 19 home runs and 52 RBI. He'll start at first base for the American League in Tuesday night's All-Star Game. What will his reaction be when he takes the field as an All-Star for the first time in his career?
“We’ll see in the moment,” Santana said. “I cannot explain what I’ll feel, but I’ll feel so great and happy for that. Tomorrow is a great day for me and great experience, especially since it’s at home.”
Santana is one of four Indians who are
expected to play in the 'Midsummer Classic.'
Right-hander Carlos Carrasco was in the crowd supporting Santana in the derby. Carrasco was
diagnosed with leukemia in June, but was
recently cleared to begin strength training.

July 9, 2019 Other teammates in attendance included All-Stars Brad Hand, Francisco Lindor and Shane Bieber. Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac were also at Progressive Field to cheer for Santana.
The 33-year-old is grateful for the support and is soaking in every second of his first All-Star experience.
