Gaines was carted off the field Sunday after trainers attended to him for 5 minutes and teammates took a knee.
“I will not know [the severity] until I go inside until we are able to really check it thoroughly and see exactly what it is,” head coach Hue Jackson said.
The injury occurred during a 2-minute drill with the first-team offense driving and it forced practice to move to an adjoining field.
Gaines played 29 defensive snaps Friday night against Buffalo and contributed on special teams as well.
“Obviously, he was a contributing member back there,” Jackson said. “He was going to play and was slated to play. That is a part of the game. We do not want to see it. Hopefully, it is nothing major. We will find out more about it. It is football. I hate to lose him, but at the same time, we know that those things do happen.”
“I do not think it is anything major,” Jackson said of Hyde, who had a couple of big runs Sunday after rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries Friday night. “Just have to be smart with some of these guys.”
Rookie Damion Ratley took Callaway’s reps during team drills and did enough to catch Jackson’s eye with a couple of nice catches Sunday.
“Ratley made some plays today,” Jackson said. “That was good to see. He needs to keep growing and keep getting better.”
Ratley caught a 17-yard and 19-yard throw on the sidelines from Taylor during a 2-minute drill plus a 20-yard reception and a touchdown off a quick slant from Baker Mayfield.
“Too many penalties. Too many yards given up. Guys not in their gaps. Too many mental errors,” Peppers said Sunday. “Overall, I think the first team had a pretty dominant night. There are still things were can get cleaned up, but we forced them three-and-out on their first four possessions. That is what you want. At the end of the day, we definitely did our job getting off the field with those three-and-outs.”
Bryant visited last Thursday and part of Friday before leaving without a contract.
“I didn’t get a chance to spend any time with him,” receiver Jarvis Landry said. “Obviously yeah, we’d love to have him. We’d love to have him be a part of this, but for now all we can focus on are the guys that are here.”
While some players, who are looking for playing time, might protest the addition of yet another receiver with the impending return of Josh Gordon, the Browns wideouts are willing to welcome Bryant with open arms should he be signed.
“If he wants to join the family, come and join it, if not, then no problem,” Ratley said. “We’re a unit right now, we’re a family and just got another piece back – JG – so just going to keep moving forward.”
“I did not think that it would get as big as it did,” Cajuste said. “I thought that is was just a story that I was trying to tell. I am not the first to have that story. However, it is an inspiration to have so many people support me.”
Cajuste’s bond with his father, who has had 3 heart attacks, was chronicled in the second of 5 episodes produced by NFL Films and airing on HBO Tuesday nights.
Although his father was not at FirstEnergy Stadium Friday night, Cajuste heard a few whistles mimicking the one he shares with his father coming from the stands.
“There was guy right behind out bench that did it,” Cajuste said. “I snapped my head and was like, ‘Did my dad surprise me?’ I was like, ‘No.’ The guy just pointed at me and I was like, ‘Hey.’ I am like, ‘Oh man, I have to change up the whistle.’”
CB Denzel Ward was given the day off to rest a sore ankle.
WR Antonio Callaway (groin) and RB Carlos Hyde (shoulder) did not complete practice Sunday.
