Berea, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Cleveland Browns knew the risks when they signed running back Kareem Hunt in February.

And not just the PR hit that they took either.

Browns owner Dee Haslam was asked for her perspective on the Hunt signing given that she is a woman and a member of the league’s legislative and conduct committees.

“I think you have to take the situation very, very, very seriously,” Mrs. Haslam said Sunday following the fourth day of training camp. “We spent a lot of time and John spent a lot of time with Kareem and felt like he has potential as a person, which is obviously as important as a player. He needs to continue to work really hard to be part of our organization.”

Hunt’s transgressions off the field and what led to his release are well documented, starting with the surveillance video published by TMZ.com of Hunt shoving and kicking a woman during an altercation in Feb. 2018 at the Metropolitan at The 9 in downtown Cleveland.

The Chiefs released Hunt the same day the video was published and went viral on Nov. 20, 2018.

Following league investigations into at least three incidents involving violence of some kind, the NFL suspended Hunt for the first eight games of the season.

“We know that Kareem has work to do, and he is in counseling working really hard,” Dee Haslam said. “It is up to him. It truly is up to him. We have high expectations for our players.”

In late June TMZ.com published a brief clip of Hunt speaking with Cleveland police outside of a West 6th street bar in downtown Cleveland amid rumors of a potential incident.

The team and league appear satisfied that Hunt hasn’t further violated the conduct policy.

“Kareem understands what he has to do to continue to be a part of the Cleveland Browns,” Jimmy Haslam said.

The Browns requested through the NFL and NFLPA that Hunt be permitted to remain around the team during his suspension.

“Those talks are still ongoing,” Jimmy Haslam said. “Obviously, the league has the final call, but those talks are still ongoing.”

Hunt is currently on NFI after reporting to camp with a groin injury.
