Defensive tackle Trevon Coley, who had been working this camp with the first-team defense next to Jamie Meder, will miss some time due to a high ankle sprain suffered Thursday.
“He is going to be down for a little while,” Jackson said. “That is one of those ankle sprains that they talk about. It is unfortunate. Those things happen.”
Jackson doesn’t know specifically how long Coley will be out but high ankle sprains usually take 4-6 weeks to heal meaning Coley won't see any preseason action.
“[It is] One of those whatever you call those things, those super-duper sprains,” Jackson said.
Coley started 15 games last season for the Browns where he had 42 tackles and 2 sacks.
Defensive lineman Caleb Brantley left Friday’s scrimmage, but Jackson doesn’t think the injury is serious.
“I think it is his thigh. I think he will be fine,” Jackson said.
“That's the Jamie we saw last year before he got hurt and when I first got here,” defensive end Myles Garrett said.
Collins made a pair of brilliant plays during Friday’s scrimmage.
He intercepted a tipped Baker Mayfield pass by defensive tackle Jamie Meder and later broke up a Tyrod Taylor pass in the back of the end zone intended for tight end David Njoku.
“He is an instinctual player,” Jackson said. “I think he sees the game a lot differently than everyone else. That is his skillset. Not that he roams or anything like that, I think within what we allow him to do is he has an idea of maybe where the ball is going and he is able to make those plays.”
With Collins as well as Garrett and Emmanuel Ogbah healthy, on paper, the Browns have a pretty strong front and it’s been showing in goal-line situations that has seen the group absolutely dominate the offense.
“Our defense is one of the best in football with the way that they play,” Jackson said.
Garrett agrees.
"I think it will be a scary combination,” Garrett said. “He can rush anywhere he wants to. I know Emmanuel can move in and I can move in. We can be effective anywhere across the line, and then you sprinkle him in, it makes a combo that people have to watch out for."
"I think he fits out there,” Garrett said. “I don't think the change has really made him any less of a great player. I think he can go out there and handle any of the top rushers."
Garrett has now squared off with Bitonio, who spent his first 4 seasons at left guard, for 3 days after the move was made Wednesday and he hopes to help the veteran offensive lineman prepare for the big change.
"I know he's going to be facing some quality rushers, and I know we have some of the best coming pretty soon in the season,” Garrett said. “So I know I'm going to give him everything I've got because if I do, he'll be able to handle them. I don't think there's much difference between me and the guys at the very top."
Martin, who is a Solon, Ohio native, booted a 55-yard field goal during Friday’s scrimmage, which caught the attention of Jackson.
“The guy has made some really strong kicks,” Jackson said. “[A] 50-plus [yard field goal] today. Yesterday, he was very consistent. He has done a nice job. We will take it all in as we evaluate.
“We are a long way from deciding who is on this team. Is he in the competition? Yes, he is.”
“I am not going to leave out starters out there very long,” Jackson said. “It is the first pre-season game. They do need to play some football together against a different opponent. I think that is important, too. We will make that decision as we go. There are going to be some guys that will need to play some more because obviously, if we are going to take those guys out, other guys have to play.”
Jackson plans to meet with his coaches in the coming days to outline their plan against the Giants.
Jackson was inspired after meeting one of the Renegades program members this summer during a ride-along with the Human Trafficking Task Force.
During the encounter, Jackson was thanked for the organization’s generosity in replacing fields with new synthetic surfaces throughout the city, but it was mentioned to him that the kids could use some new cleats prompting Jackson to arrange the giveaway in conjunction with the Browns' Give 10 initiative.
DT Caleb Brantley (quadriceps) left the scrimmage.
