León, 30, is known for his defense. He’s thrown out 32.2 percent (58-for-122) of runners that have tried to steal bases during his 8-year career. Red Sox pitchers have posted a 3.74 ERA over the past five seasons with León at catcher, which is the fifth-lowest mark among catchers during that span.
León posted a .192 (33-for-172) batting average with five home runs and 19 RBI in 65 games last season. He’s hitting .221 with 25 home runs and 123 RBI in his 8-year career.
This deal could lead to another moving involving backup catcher Kevin Plawecki, who has two years of control left and will be a free agent in 2022. The Indians also have catchers Roberto Pérez and Eric Haase on their 40-man roster.
The Indians designated James Hoyt for assignment to clear a roster spot for León.
