Indians legend Jim Thome enjoys watching Mayfield and thinks he can be the man to turn around the Browns.
“I think just watching him, [he’s] someone that cares, someone that has respect for the city, wants to win, wants to be in special moments,” Thome said. “If he does that they will embrace him here like no other. I don’t even think he understands it, because if he does that – this is a town, this is a city waiting for that to happen.”
Thome obviously loves baseball and has seen what LeBron James did for the Cavaliers and the City of Cleveland, but he knows things will change for the better if the Browns can be good again.
“This is a great baseball city, they’ve loved basketball, but they love football, I think we all know that. He’s [Mayfield] kind of all of that without truly knowing it as an observer and just watching him.”
Thome spoke with the media after the Indians announced that he would join Sandy Alomar Jr., and Francisco Lindor as ambassadors for the MLB All-Star Game this July.
Mayfield has gotten his fair share of praise this offseason. Thome’s comments come on the heels of Odell Beckham Jr. comparing him to Brett Favre.
