Cleveland, OH (92.3 The Fan) – The Indians took a flier on Hanley Ramirez to see if he had anything left in the tank. They're hoping that he flashes enough this spring to not only make the roster, but to bring power to the middle of their lineup.

The six-time All-Star told reporters he was ready to play. The Indians won't rush him onto the field.

“There will be a little bit of a buildup,” Francona said on Thursday. “My guess it’s more like four or five days. He hasn’t been on the bases. There are some things we need to accomplish first just to put him in a good place."

Ramirez hasn't played in a big-league game since May 24 of last season. He did play winter ball and told reporters he was ready to play. Francona was adamant about easing him into actual games.

“I don’t think he needs to prove who he is,” said Francona. “What he’s done has been really tremendous. But his last game was in May. Our goal is to win. So there are some things he needs to prove. We want to give him the best chance. So by rushing him out there, even though he’s eager to do it, I don’t think puts him in the best chance to do that.”

If the 35-year-old has something to offer, then this appears to be a great situation for him. Francona says the Indians are looking for bat speed. The Tribe is in need of more power in their lineup. They're projected to win the American League Central for a fourth-straight year.

What veteran wouldn't be excited to join a playoff contender after not playing for nine months? If Ramirez is going to succeed, then Cleveland is the place for him. The Indians need him to work out, which means they'll give him every opportunity to show that he deserves a chance.

“I’m glad he wants to get out there, but we want to do this right.”
