Allen, 30, spent the first seven years of his career in Cleveland and became the all-time leader in saves last July. He was disappointing last season, finishing with a 4.70 ERA. Signing a one-year contract gives him the opportunity to show last year was an outlier. A successful 2019 campaign could lead to a longer contract next offseason. Allen posted five consecutive seasons of sub-3.00 ERA pitching prior to the 2018 season.
He finishes his Indians career with 149 total saves and posted a career high 34 saves in 2015. Allen was expected to sign elsewhere this offseason, but his departure is a reminder that the Indians’ roster continues to look more and more different following three-straight American League Central Division Championships.
