Unfortunately for Landry, in the age of aggregation and social media, the toothpaste is already out of the tube.
Here’s what happened.
Landry was asked: “Now that you guys are all rested up, what is your sense for how the Browns are going to do coming out of the bye?”
Landry responded: “We're gonna win. It's just that simple. Getting guys back healthy again and we're going to win.”
Once the quote, without the proper context hit Twitter, all bets were off. Pro Football Talk and Deadspin were among the sites that raced to their keyboards to proclaim that Landry guaranteed a win that he never actually guaranteed.
Later Landry was asked about the intimidating environment at Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots have 6 Super Bowl banners hanging and are 97-1 when leading at halftime and are 118-21 overall in the regular season since 2002.
“The mission don’t change,” Landry said. “The mission don’t change. It’s the same thing. We’re going [there] to win the game.”
Landry said what any and every other player would say, which does not equate to a guarentee no matter how bad websites want their clicks.
“I know there is a lot of speculation out there, but I think when you look at the big picture and when you talk about 53 guys, if you guys really want to try and help us out, I think you can petition to the league – I do not know if it will work – to where you may get all 53 guys up on gameday,” Wilks said. “When you look at the big picture, sometimes it equates to special teams. It is not just defense and what we are trying to get done. It is really the big picture of the team. Which guys are up? Who is going to help out more on special teams? The rotation that particular week up front on defense, is it more of a running team? Do we need more of a run-stopper in there?
“I think Genard brings a great skillset. I think he has tremendous speed off the edge. I think he has the ability to get to the quarterback and affect the game in a positive way. We will see exactly what happens this week and who is up. I am sure if he is, he will make a major impact on the game.”
“He was a great mentor to me. His friendship meant a lot to me,” Priefer said. “He really understood the game. We used to talk complementary football. We used to just talk about little things, about players and how to motivate players. He was quite the motivator.”
Priefer recalled a time when Steve Belichick called him out during a physical readiness test for not properly doing pull-ups.
“I remember doing pull-ups and he is counting them and I think that I am cranking them out,” Priefer said. “I look down, I do like four and he goes, ‘Oh, that is one.’ I am looking down and I am like, ‘Coach, I did four.’ He goes, ‘You did not go all the way down or all the way up’ or whatever it was.
“He is a tough, hard-nosed guy. He was a great military and Navy veteran, served in World War II. He was just a good man. His friendship meant a lot to me.”\
Like father, like son.
Forbes was officially placed on IR with a left knee injury on Sept. 2. In a corresponding roster manipulation move, starting left tackle Greg Robinson’s contract was terminated on Sept. 1 and he was re-signed the next day to open the door for a possible return for Forbes, who by league rule had to be on the initial Week 1 53 for 1 day to be eligible to return.
The Browns now have 21 days to activate Forbes to the 53 and the earliest he is eligible to play is Nov. 10 against Buffalo.
