Berea, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Linebacker Joe Schobert would like to stay with the Browns and sign an extension.

He’s certainly been doing his part to make the front office consider it recently.

Schobert was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week after collecting two interceptions in Sunday’s 41-24 drubbing of the Dolphins.

“I think he’s great with his eyes, he’s very intelligent, can react and focus and concentrate on what he’s got to go on an every-play basis, which puts him in position to make those plays,” head coach Freddie Kitchens said. “And when he’s been in position to make the plays … sometimes guys can be in the position to make a play and not make it, well, he’s made ‘em.”

Schobert became the first linebacker since Cato June in 2005 with back-to-back multi interception games and he is the sixth in NFL history at his position.

Schobert, who is the first Browns defender to win the award since D’Qwell Jackson in Week 12 of the 2012 season, also had five tackles and four passes defensed in the win.

The 2016 fourth-round pick leads the team in tackles with 97, interceptions (four), and pass breakups (nine) this season.

“I think Joe went into the season wanting to make sure he brought his feet in tackling, was good with his aiming points in tackling and I think his tackling has got a lot better,” Kitchens said.

Concussion protocol – Left tackle Greg Robinson did not practice Wednesday because he has been placed in concussion protocol.

Robinson, who volunteered Tuesday at the Greater Cleveland Foodbank, reported the symptoms Wednesday morning according to the team.

“Hopefully, he can get back,” left guard Joel Bitonio said. “I do not know all the details on that stuff, but we have guys that have played in the NFL before. McCray has played this year. Lamm has been around, and like I said, hopefully Greg can get back.

“He is a big, strong guy and he went up against them a couple of weeks ago. He kind of knows Bud Dupree and some of those guys that rush him over there, but we will be ready. We have guys that know this offense, they are going to fight and go against these guys. They are a great defense whatever you put out there. We will be ready. We will have five guys ready to roll, and that is the nature of the beast.”

Justin McCray started in his place 4 weeks ago when Robinson was benched for a week against the Patriots.

Welcome back – Defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi returned officially to practice following his one-game suspension Wednesday.

“Larry brings a lot of energy – relentless, resilient,” Kitchens said. “Larry is a good football player. He is conscious of his rush lanes, his gap integrity, which makes him a good football player when you add his skillset to that.”

Mystery move – Kitchens shed little light on the decision to waive defensive tackle Devaroe Lawrence to make room for Ogunjobi’s return.

“You have to make roster decisions during the course of the year,” Kitchens said.

“You don’t really take but seven or eight to the game so all you need is seven or eight. Devaroe did a good job for us while he was here, and we wish him nothing but the best.”

Practice squad add – The Browns signed defensive end Robert McCray to the practice squad.

McCray is a first-year player out of Indiana who was originally signed by Kansas City in 2018. He spent time on the Chiefs’ practice squad last year and was with Kansas City until final roster cuts this season.
