CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Cleveland Browns left guard Joel Bitonio was voted to the Associated Press All-Pro second team for the second straight year.
Bitonio was the only Browns player represented on either the first or second team for the 2019 season.
Running back Nick Chubb was snubbed by the panel of 50 nationwide voters.
Bitonio received three votes and Chubb received two votes. Linebacker Joe Schobert also received a vote.
Titans running back Derrick Henry was named second-team All Pro at two positions, running back and Flex while Panthers back Christian McCaffrey was named the running back and Flex for the first team.
Chubb finished second in the NFL in rushing this past season with 1,494 yards and third in total scrimmage yards with 1,772.
Reference check – Mike McCarthy appears welcome to use Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre as a reference.
On his weekly radio show that airs on Sirius/XM NFL Radio, Favre vouched for his former head coach in Green Bay.
“I think he’ll do a great job,” Favre said. “I had him in 1999, and that was basically the middle of my career, and after that year he was gone but then he came back obviously as the head coach. And really a bright mind. Good for a quarterback. I think any young quarterback would like him. And he’s very understandable, much like Brian Daboll at Buffalo and Darrell Bevell, guys who are coaching right now, relate to the guys very well. And I think that’s important, on top of his X’s and O’s mentality.
“Obviously he’s had Aaron Rodgers and that certainly helps but I do think he brings a level of toughness, but also a confidence that as a player, as a quarterback for him, you feel confident in the plays that he calls that he’s going to call plays that cater more to your ability rather than maybe a previous guy he had. So I think he’s a simple but yet confidence-building and technique-driven coach. He’ll be a good fit for any of those teams.”
McCarthy, who took the Packers to the playoffs nine times in 13 years that included four trips to the NFL title game and a Super Bowl XLV, was the first to be interviewed by the Browns in their latest coaching search on Thursday.
Young in – Ohio State star defensive end Chase Young declared for the 2019 NFL Draft Friday.
Young, who made the announcement on his Twitter account, is expected to be one of the top picks in the upcoming draft meaning he’ll be long gone before the Browns go on the clock at No. 10.
Up next – The coaching search will continue through the weekend. The Browns are scheduled to meet with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh in San Francisco Saturday and Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll Sunday in Buffalo.
Interviews with Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will have to wait until after Wild Card weekend per league rules.
