Cleveland, OH (92.3 The Fan) – Larry Drew did all he could to get the rebuilding Cavaliers through a difficult season.
Whether or not it is enough to allow him to return next season remains to be seen.
Prior to Tuesday night’s season finale against the Charlotte Hornets Drew was asked if he’s coaching Cleveland’s basketball team for the final time.
“Let’s hope not,” Drew said.
Drew, who has avoided talk about his future while the season would down, plans to meet with general manager Koby Altman in the coming days but that meeting has not been scheduled according to Drew.
“We’re going to give it a few days and we’ll sit down and discuss it,” Drew said.
Drew took over seven games into the season after Tyronn Lue was fired. He was given a raise and an option for next season was added to the contract.
Drew believes that he accomplished what he and the organization set out for him to do this season – develop the team’s young players, most notably Cedi Osman and Collin Sexton.
“I can clearly say that I checked the boxes of what I had to accomplish, and I’m very proud of what I’ve done and my staff along with what we’ve had to endure,” Drew said. “I’m comfortable with what took place.”
Drew was able to keep the shorthanded and injury-riddled Cavs from falling apart behind the scenes and he certainly has the endorsement of the players.
“I love LD, everybody knows that,” Kevin Love said. “It’s just a matter if he wants to be back.
“If he is with us great, if not, wish him the best and hope we kick his ass when he's a head coach somewhere else.”
