The Indians learned about Clevinger’s involvement on Monday the team said in a statement released Monday evening and have pulled him from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs.
“Today the organization learned that RHP Mike Clevinger violated team protocols on the club's recent road trip to Chicago. He has been instructed to quarantine and will undergo subsequent testing while away from the team. RHP Adam Plutko will start in his place on Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs. The Cleveland Indians will continue to keep the health and safety of our players, coaches and staff members as our top priority.”
Plesac was sent home by the team on Sunday and took a car service back to Cleveland after officials learned he violated the safety protocols by going out.
Protocols require that Plesac quarantine for at least 72 hours and undergo daily COVID-19 testing Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said Sunday night following their 5-4 win over the White Sox.
It is expected Clevinger will be required to do the same.
According to Jon Heyman, Clevinger defended Plesac in a team meeting Sunday knowing that he had gone out with him. Clevinger also flew home with the entire team.
Both players could face discipline from the club.
