The NBA announced Monday it had completed its investigation into the Cavaliers' signing and subsequent waiver of Patrick McCaw, and the Cavs have been cleared of any wrong-doing. The league was investigating whether the Cavs violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement, including the anti-circumvention rules.
McCaw and the Golden State Warriors had reached a restricted free agency contract impasse when the Cavs signed the 23-year old wing to a 2-year, $6 million offer sheet on Dec. 28th. The Warriors declined to match the offer and McCaw joined the Cavs on Dec. 30th. He was waived by the Cavs on Jan. 6th and, after clearing waivers, allowed to sign with any team of his choosing.
He signed a 1-year contract for the veteran's minimum with the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 10. After releasing McCaw, the Cavs signed guard Cameron Payne to a 10-day contract.
The league was investigating whether the Cavs had intentionally signed McCaw to spring him from restricted free agency, without plans to keep him long term. It appears they were ultimately unable to prove that intent.
Also on Monday, the Cavs signed Deng Adel to a 2-way contract. Adel was last with the 905 Raptors, Toronto's G-League affiliate. He is a 21-year old wing who played college basketball at Louisville.
